Putin's invasion of Ukraine

The criminal decision of the dictator Putin to invade Ukraine is to be condemned by all countries, and the west (US and Europe) is imposing economic sanctions to “punish” the aggressor.  Russia believes it can bend Europe by threatening to end supplies of gas and oil.  This however, will ultimately be the real sanction that Putin will have self-imposed on himself. In fact, his blackmail will accelerate the energy transition in Europe towards renewables, and in a few years, Russia will have lost one of its major sources of finance.

Europe will suffer in the short term, but will surely be able to overcome a few years of difficulties by saving, using the strategic reserves of fossil fuels, and increasing imports from other suppliers and increasing its own internal production from various sources (gas, coal, and nuclear for those countries who dispose of it), but most of all, accelerating as much as possible the installation of wind and solar plants.

The latter will especially be spearheaded by citizens and institutions, and its impact will be immediate.  Italy, especially, which is the country most dependent on Russian gas, can aim on solar energy thanks to the hours of sun it has and to a national producer of technologically advanced solar panels such as Enel.  In addition, with the annual cost of solar panels and with existing incentives, the pay-back (both for single individuals and for companies), is of only 4-5 years (depending on the regions) and one has free energy for another 25 years: an excellent investment.  It is the role of Institutions to support this process.

The geopolitical crisis in Ukraine and Europe’s energetic independence through SOLAR POWER

The current geopolitical crisis in Ukraine has caused prices of oil and natural gas to spike and has put Europe in a state of blackmail by Russia.  For Europe, it is of vital importance to become self-sufficient in terms of their energy needs.  And this is especially true for Italy which has few fossil fuel resources in its territory.

The solution is not in searching for new oil or natural gas deposits (that is new fossil fuel resources), nor in potential new generation nuclear power plants: these solutions would be too expensive and would take too long (in addition to all the environmental risks).

The solution is the SUN, and in particular PHOTOVOLTAIC. Today, in Italy, with the existing incentives (without even taking into account the 110% superbonus), the payback of investments in photovoltaic panels is 3-4 years, after which one has free energy for 25 more years.  As responsible citizens we should install (for those who have not done so yet), photovoltaic panels on the roofs of our homes.  It is a very convenient investment from an economic point of view, and extremely healthy from an environmental perspective (zero emissions and zero land use), and that can be renewed every 30 years for many millions and millions of years…

And this concerns also Public Entities and Companies, big and small.  The transition towards energetic independence can take place in few years and become permanent, forever.

One last consideration: preferably use photovoltaic panels produced in Europe (and especially not Chinese, to avoid favouring their economic imperialism currently taking place).

The Great Challenges of Humanity in the next decade and the Decalogue of the Responsible Citizen

In the decade from 2021 to 2030, humanity will have to face five great challenges (in addition to the current Covid-19 pandemic). The choices made in this decade may mark the development of Human Society for many more decades, perhaps even centuries, to come.

In 2020, and for a good part of 2021, the biggest crisis in Human Society is and will be the Covid-19 Pandemic. This crisis will be resolved worldwide within 2021 thanks to the (already started) vaccines. However, it will have already led to the death of over 3,000,000 citizens in the world. In addition to this epidemic crisis, Humanity will have to confront five other major challenges in this decade:

1.     The economic crisis

2.     The Climate and Environmental Crisis

3.     Islamic fundamentalism

4.     Chinese imperialism

5.     Global extreme economic inequality

1. THE ECONOMIC CRISIS

The economic crisis is already weighing and will continue to weigh in on all world economies as a consequence of the pandemic, except for China’s (which is instead finding a strong ally in the pandemic to accelerate its economic growth compared to Western countries), and some other Asian countries such as Singapore and South Korea.  This economic crisis has already created millions of unemployed and underemployed and will continue to create tens of millions more, especially in Africa, Europe, the Americas, and in the weaker Asian economies. This will happen before the world’s worst affected economies can return to pre-pandemic economic growth within the next four years. Finally, the pandemic and the economic crisis will accelerate social and economic inequalities. The consequences will be social tensions, hunger, and violence which risk generating more deaths worldwide in the following five years than those caused by the pandemic.

2. THE ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS AND GLOBAL WARMING

Scientists agree on the devastating consequences of Global Warming if the warming of the planet, mainly due to CO2 emissions in the atmosphere, should exceed pre-industrial temperatures by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, it was believed that we had more time (until 2050) to correct the problem. Unfortunately, times are shortening and if CO2 emissions are not cut by at least 50% before 2030, the phenomenon risks spinning out of control. Extreme phenomena (melting of glaciers, advancing desertification, floods, and storms) are constantly growing and are already causing increased migration from the worst affected countries as well as hundreds of thousands of deaths from hunger, violence, and various hardships. We must act IMMEDIATELY, otherwise the number of deaths leading to 2050 will continue to grow in the hundreds of thousands, potentially reaching over a billion human beings.

3. ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM

Islamic fundamentalism is an instrument of religious nature used by some Muslim countries (particularly in the Middle East), to exploit socioeconomic instability of millions of muslims in the world to obtain geopolitical advantages.  These countries which support Islamic Fundamentalism obtain their resources from fossil fuel proceeds.  Unfortunately, Fundamentalism, in pursuing its sociopolitical objectives has perpetrated in some cases terrifying terrorist acts.  The phenomena is most recently in decline, but continues to be a threat for countries of other religions.

4. CHINESE IMPERIALISM

The Chinese economy has been growing for many years much more rapidly than that of more advanced western economies.  Today, it is the second world economy and with the current growth differentials, it will surpass the US economy within the next 15 years, to become solidly the first world economy.  Even technologically, China is progressing in leaps and strides, especially in strategic fields like Artificial Intelligence, Ultra Wideband (5G), and the transition to green technologies towards “zero emissions”.  And their internal growth is associated with a strong foreign expansionism through the acquisition of many companies in advanced sectors and of strategic foreign infrastructure.  And up to this point, it is all legitimate.  The problem is that China is a dictatorship, and hence its economic expansionism risks having political and social consequences on the countries which enter its orbit with unexpected impacts but surely negative on the democratic liberties of these countries and their citizens.

5. EXTREME WEALTH INEQUALITIES

This is the biggest and most shameful challenge.  According to the last OXFAM report, the 2135 billionaires (richest people in the world), owned, in 2020, the equivalent of the cumulative wealth of over 4.600.000.000 of the world’s poorest (over 60% of the world population). The 26 richest people in the world own the same cumulative wealth of the 3.500.000.000 poorest of the world (nearly half of the world population).  And this extreme wealth gap continues to increase.  The rich become richer and the poor increase.  THIS IS THE GREATEST DISGRACE OF OUR TIMES. De facto, an “informal club” has formed of the few hundred super rich of the word, who know each other and collaborate informally, and have such economic power to not only control world economies, but also to have politicians of their choice elected, hence controlling also world political systems on economic aspects that secure their privileges.

To win these 5 great challenges, the Governments of all world Countries should commit through legislative choices which aim at sustaining the energetic transition towards renewables, at fighting monopolies and at sustaining SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) with adequate fiscal incentives, at protecting strategic sectors of their economies from foreign acquisitions, at helping the economically weakest citizens with free school at least until the age of 16, free health care, and solidarity subsidies for whomever is in conditions of extreme poverty, and finally, and above all, with very redistributive fiscal policies that redistribute wealth from the richest towards the State, and through the latter towards the social services and support that favour the most vulnerable. In the fiscal sector, a very important aspect would be the imposition of a wealth tax of 1% on the first 10 Million Euro equivalent in wealth (excluding the first home and the first 200K Euros saved), and of 2% on the wealth above 10 Million Euro equivalent.  This wealth tax would in fact exclude 95% of the population and affect only a very small portion of the most affluent.

The European Union and more specifically, the Countries of the Eurozone, are, I believe, the biggest and most involved economic macrosystem tackling these challenges, and as macrosystem, they have the dimensions of scale, economically, geographically, demographically, and politically, to be able to do so.

In any case, citizens, as individuals, can contribute to overcome these challenges with their daily virtuous behavior, without having to wait for Governments to act, by following the Decalogue of the Responsible Citizen below.

Decalogue of the Responsible Citizen

 1. Apply in all behaviours the three Rs of Ecology:

                Reduce

Reuse

Recycle

2. Reduce meat as much as possible, especially beef (which for the same calories, uses 5 times the land of a vegetarian diet, sheep meat 4 times, and poultry 3 times).  This will benefit human health as well as the environment.  Factory farms are the major cause of deforestation.

3. Use ECOSIA as an internet search engine.  ECOSIA has a policy by which it uses 80% of its proceeds from advertising to finance tree planting in a number of countries in the world, slowing down the process of deforestation.  Every year 15 Billion trees are cut down and only 5 Billion are planted…

4. Buy agricultural products directly from the producers, where possible, at zero Km, or at least originating from one’s country, or at most from the macrosystem where one lives (for example Italy, or at most from the EU).

5. Drastically reduce or even eliminate plastic consumption, and for single use plastics only use biodegradable plastic.

6. Install photovoltaic panels on the roofs of one’s home or apartment building, and storage batteries and heat pumps to produce heating and hot water.  In addition, sign contract for the supply of electricity (and gas for residual needs) with Companies that guarantee its origin from renewable sources.

7. Promote in one’s social circles (workplace, religious community, municipal offices…) renewable energyes as in point 6.

8. For city mobility, opt for public transportation.  And in any case, for one’s own private means of transport, buy or rent electric or hybrid plug-in cars.

9. Never buy products “Made in China”, even if from European companies.

10. European citizens should favor through their behaviour, communication contacts, and especially their vote in political elections, all pro-Europe formations that aim for the creation of a “United States of Europe” that can be the economic macrosystem able to conquer (and serve as example to the whole world), the 5 great challenges facing Humanity.

1. La crisi economica

2. La crisi ambientale ed il Global Warming

3. Il Fondamentalismo Islamico

4. L’ imperialismo cinese

5. L’estrema diseguaglianza economica nel mondo

energetica verso “emissioni zero”.

1. Applicare in tutti i comportamenti le tre R dell’Ecologia:

                        Ridurre

Riusare

Riciclare
